British Prime Minister from 1908 to 1916; he succeeded in reducing the power of the House of Lords and advancing the Liberal agenda via the People's Budget; he took Great Britain into World War I and successfully united the country behind the war effort; his early decisions on national mobilization, the dispatch of the British Expeditionary Force, the creation of a mass army and industrial strategy all helped contribute to Britain's ultimate success

Irene Joliot-Curie

The daughter of Marie and Pierre Curie who became an eminent chemist in her own right; in 1935, along with her husband she received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for the discovery of artificial radioactivity; during World War I, Joliot-Curie served as a radiographer in field hospitals before earning her doctorate after the war; her exposure to dangerous substances eventually overcame her and she died of leukemia from its effects aged 59


Jesse Owens
