Chief Joseph

Born to play the 7 of Spades / 8 of Hearts

Leader of the Nez Perce who led his people during the most tumultuous period in their history, when, in a reversal of the negotiated treaty, they were forcibly removed by the US Army from their ancestral lands in Oregon; instead of going to the reservation, however, he led 700 men, women, and children in a 1,170-mile fighting retreat in an attempt to reach Canada and seek political asylum there; the skill with which the Nez Perce fought and the manner in which they conducted themselves in the face of incredible adversity earned them widespread admiration and coverage in US newspapers; however, he received credit in the press for military genius that was not his; in fact, it was other war chiefs who were the skilled warriors, but the press gave him the credit of a military genius; after months of fugitive resistance, cornered just 40 miles short of the Canadian border, his people freezing to death, and with no remaining warrior chiefs to lead the battles; he surrendered to the US Army with the understanding that he and his people would be allowed to go to their reservation; he was instead, in another betrayal, transported between various forts and reservations until he died; it wasn’t the last time he was betrayed by the US government either; in his later years, still pleading for justice for his people, he became renowned as an indomitable voice of conscience; still in exile from his homeland, he died on September 21, 1904, according to his doctor, "of a broken heart."
